Stolen Colt .45 Returned To American Hero

By: J.R. Absher

Aug 23

Avid shooter, gun collector and retired U.S. Navy Warrant Officer George Berry said he’d always wanted to own a classic Colt 1911 A1 .45 cal. pistol like those issued to generations of American soldiers, and he found one to his liking on an online auction website in July.

“Colt 1911 A1 semi-automatic pistol. Cal. 45. 5" bbl. SN 0103889. Re-blued finish on all metal, plain walnut Colt grips, after-market rear sight, no magazine,” the description posted on the Alderfer Auction website read. “Faint ‘USMC’ stamped on right side of slide, partial ‘United States Property’ wording is visible,” it continued. “The name “John J. McGinty USMC’ stamped on left side of slide. Very good.”

Berry would later tell a reporter from his hometown newspaper, the “Medford (Oregon) Mail-Tribune” that he was at first hesitant because the gun had been re-blued, the grips were not originals and it had someone’s name engraved on it, but he felt he purchased it at a fair price, paying less the $1,000 for the gun made in 1914.

Upon receipt of the pistol he began some research online, where he quickly made an astounding discovery: Capt. John J. McGinty, the man whose name was engraved on the pistol, was a recipient of the coveted Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest and most prestigious military award.

It gets better.

Doing further online tracking, Berry found that the retired Marine, McGinty, 71, lived in Beaufort, South Carolina, so he gave him a call and asked him about the 1911 pistol.

“He said, ‘Do you mean 0103889?’” Berry told the Medford newspaper, noting that McGinty automatically recited the gun’s serial number from memory.

McGinty went on to tell Berry that the pistol had been stolen in 1978 while on public display. Further, it was the sidearm McGinty carried on a fateful 1966 July day in Vietnam, using it to kill five enemy troops at point-blank range as he saved the lives of his comrades during Operation Hastings.

President Lyndon Johnson presented John J. McGinty with the Medal of Honor during a ceremony at the White House on March 12, 1968, for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.”

As for the Colt with serial number 0103889, it has now been returned to a true American hero, John J. McGinty, USMC. It was sent to him, without charge, by another American hero, U.S. Navy Warrant Officer George Berry.

"I told him I didn't want any money, that I had just wanted a Model 1911," Berry said. "Concern yourself with what is right and you'll never second-guess that decision."

This is truly a remarkable story. It is a testimony to the spirit and bond between servicemen that will never be understood by the chump who stole the pistol in 1978. I wish that more Americans had this since of reverence and honor still engrained in them. I guess that it is up to the rest of us to pass the ideals that made this country so great.
Thank you to both John McGuinty and George Berry for their service to our country and thanks J.R for sharing this story.

As a fellow serviceman I full heartedly agree with the idea of getting Berry his own 1911. I can and will through in some towards such an honorable goal. Berry, you did something that was never asked of you and have made us all proud. Thank you for your service. McGinty, your service in Operation Hastings is taught even in Air Force history. Thank you for all you gave to this country. I can only hope to contribute half as much for our beloved nation.

Another testimony of what great bonds soldiers have for one another. I am in the service still after 19 yrs and I Salute you George Berry for your service and for what you have done. I worked for a company for 12yrs in South Dakota that did lots of commemorative guns, centennials, Ducks unlimited, Pheasants for Ever etc. They do great work and they could put what ever a person wants on the gun. I am sure they would be happy to be part of this. A & A engraving is the company.

I'm a 20 year Vet. myself, (1963-1983). I've never commented on any of these stories on this site, but I couldn't pass on this one.
I say AMEND to all of the previous comments.
Who-ever has the authority to start a collection for Mr. Berry's new 100 Yr. Anniversary 1911 A1 .45, should do so.
I would gladly contribute.

I tried posting a comment Friday, don't know what happened?

Anyway, growing up in a Military Family (USAF) I've had the Honor to shake the hands of a few Medal Of Honor Recipients, mostly because I was in the right place at the right time. I Stand & Salute Capt. McGinty & W.O. Berry for their Honorable Service to OUR Country.

Then to have some coward steal the Captain's valued sidearm is shameful, he'll get his in the end. Then came the self-less act of W.O. Berry, to have bought this 1911, research its history & find out who it rightfully belonged to & return it without charge. Yes, I agree with "Mike" - "Berry is a Hero, no medal needed"!

NAHC - You Cannot let this opportunity slip away to Honor W.O. Berry for his actions. Who ever is in charge, PLEASE get this Fund Raiser rolling. It would be a Great Honor for the NAHC & all our members to present a brand new 1911 to George Berry! Even if every member donated $10. $20. or even a little more, I know we could raise enough to buy a quality piece.

Remember this; "For Those Who Fought For It, FREEDOM Has A Flavor The Protected Will Never Know".

E-mail me when you get this fund raiser organized & I'll be more than happy to help. Vince S. - Manton, Mi.

Mr Berry needs to go to the gun store and price out the 1911 , have them setup a account for the gun and send out emails to all with gun store and account number and let all send in that way, just make sure of no fraud

Thanks to both John McGuinty and George Berry for service to our country... as long as the honor displayed by both of these men is still alive there is still hope for our nation. Count me in on helping to buy Mr. Berry his own 1911, good people need to know that there are other good people who have their back. - Rich

Well I have some good news, not what I expected but here it is. I just got done reading an article (dated 29, Aug. 2011) on the "mailtribune.com" web site, the story is "Actions that make Heroes". Yes, it's about this same story, but there is allot more. In appreciation for George Berry returning his 1911, McGuinty sent him a different 1911 that belonged to another MOH recipient ; "John W. Finn" a friend of his that passed away just last year.

It would have been an honor to donate to this cause, like we had all wished to do, but I don't think we could top this in a million years.

Best Regards,
Your Fellow Hunter!!

SEMPER FI, SIR!!! It takes a big man to do something so incredibly selfless. I'm inspired by you both, CWO Berry for returning the pistol, and Capt McGinty for being so cool, calm, and collected in the face of danger in 1966. My sincerest regards to you both, gentlemen.

Respectfully,

It would be an honor to salute both of these gentlemen. I do have one problem with the story as written. That would be the word " coveted " refering to the medal. I seriously doubt that that term applies to any who have been AWARDED this recognition!

As a recently retired 34-year active duty Soldier, what a great article to read. I'd be willing to kick in a donation also, especially since it for the best side-arm I ever carried in combat. Thanks for showing that honor still exists Chief Berry!

Just sent an email to member services asking them to set up an option for folks visiting the website to donate a few dollars towards getting WO Berry another 1911 A1. The idea would be to have NAHC go out and find a 1911 A1 model similar to the one Berry purchased, price it out, post photos and a description of it online, as well as publish the information in the magazine, and then provide an avenue for donations to be made. Any extra money at the end of the campaign could be donated to the USO, VA, American Legion, or any other association that provides support for former and current military members.

I've never posted on this site before, and I'm not particularly prone to jumping on with some random cause, but this story is simply too good an opportunity to pass up. If you have other ideas about how NAHC could help organize this, or have ideas that make my plan better (I'm certainly no genius), I urge you to write NAHC and let them know. Even if you have no further ideas, please write them in support of this plan. Let's show our support for both of these outstanding gentlemen.

Another fine example of honor amoung our service men and women. Although WO Berry received another 1911, As a life member I still think NAHC should do something for him for his service and honor in returning the stolen 1911. Simply as a token of appreciation from NAHC and all it's members.

I would have to agree with ptwilson. I remember reading that WO Berry is a gun collector. Having more then one 1911 is no problem for somone who collects guns. I would like to see NAHC members have an oportunity to do somthing for Mr Berry.
It never hurts to hear a thank you form more then one source.
