Opposite Forces Align To Keep Sunday Hunting Ban

By: J.R. Absher

Aug 17

An issue that’s boiling over in Pennsylvania is not only pitting some hunters against other hunters, but it’s also aligning some sportsmen with agricultural interests with a long-avowed nemesis—the anti-hunting behemoth known as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

In late June, a historic resolution approved by the Pennsylvania Game Commission called for an end to the long-standing ban on Sunday hunting and supported the introduction of legislation (HB 1760) that would lead to the reversal of the restriction that has stood—literally—since colonial times.

The move by the commission was generally praised Keystone State sportsmen, as well as by a coalition of hunting and conservation groups led by the National Shooting Sport Foundation.

The passage of HB 1760 would shift the authority to regulate Sunday hunting from the General Assembly, where it currently resides, to the Game Commission. The Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee has scheduled a second hearing on the bill for September 15, 2011.

In recent weeks, rhetoric both for and against the measure has intensified, with the state’s largest agricultural organization, the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, leading the opposition, surprising many observers with its unwavering resistance.

On the other hand, it’s no surprise to sportsmen to see the nation’s largest and most active anti-hunting organization, the HSUS, leading the animal rights side on the Sunday hunting issue. What's truly disturbing, though, is to see both factions—agriculture and animal rights—fighting side-by-side, in an effort to restrict hunting rights.

“It is really easy to understand why HSUS opposes House Bill 1760,” said Rob Sexton of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance. “They know that hunting on Sunday will strengthen the future of hunting by allowing families a day to be in the field together when work or school does not compete.

“But it is not easy at all to understand why the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is on the same side,” Sexton went on. “In fact it makes no sense at all. Hunters and farmers should be on the same side. We are natural allies.”

Currently 11 states—Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia—have some type of Sunday hunting restriction or prohibition dating back to “blue laws” originally enacted in the 1700s.

The Sunday Hunting Coalition is comprised of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, National Rifle Association, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Archery Trade Association, Boone and Crockett Club, Cabela’s, Delta Waterfowl, Mule Deer Foundation, National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses, Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever, Quality Deer Management Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Safari Club International, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and the Wildlife Management Institute.

I live in Md. and although we are "allowed" two Sunday hunts, one during archery and one during black powder seasons, I would like to see them open Sunday hunting full time. People who work Mon. thru Fri. miss out on a lot of time afield. Thanks for letting me put in a word. Mark Perryville, Md.

so you are telling me that there is actualy or has actualy been a law aganst hunting on sunday in one or any state in the United States of Ameriaca. that is absulutly unAmerican. I dont know what to say to that because I have never lived in a state that had such a law, but you better believe that if I ever had I would be the first person to be pushing aganst it. I go to Church and I belive in God. Even during deer season I go to Church unless Im to sick to hunt. but I go hunting for a few hours sunday morning. and I sit In the pew in my cammo and coverscent and when the last Amen is said I head back out to the woods and yes I have gotten a few deer on sunday over the years and no I dont have a cammo tie. And I not any better or worse than anyone else. I just love to hunt and praise God.

I would have to agree with dcarter11. I am a hunting Christian as well and in my family, Sunday has always been a “no hunting day”. I have no problem with anyone who wants to hunt on Sunday. You can bet that if I was on a guided hunt in another state I would be out on a Sunday. This should be an individual decision not a law. In a day when everyone closed their business and went to church on Sunday, a “no hunting” law was fine. Personally, I wish it was still that way but (all but the law) hunting or not hunting should be left for the hunter to decide.

I agree with npaul. I grew up in a home where we did not hunt on Sunday, and for the most part I have followed that value in my adult life with some exceptions, but it should be up to the individual to decide if they wish to hunt on Sunday or not. A law is not nescesssary. For some folks, Sunday is the only day they can hunt.

I have to agree with CBANACH I also live in mass and think that the "No Hunting on Sunday" law is stupid, Main reason for me is that i work night 11pm-7am Mon-Fri. So this means I get off work at 7am on Saturday morning which doesn't always happen on time by the way, so I get very little time to hunt on Saturday's in general, and not being able to hunt on Sunday's is a huge annoyance to me and fellow hunters here in Mass because for me its right back to work on Monday without even a chance at getting back into the field for another week.

from what I've heard and read about the PA deer herd, allowing Sunday hunting would be a great management tool as well. And as for more time for families being together; who can argue against that?!? I would seriously consider moving if NY ruled against Sunday hunting!

OUR NATION WAS FOUNDED ON GODLY PRINCIPALS THAT SHOULD NEVER CHANGE.JUST ANOTHER SUBTLE PLOY TO ERODE OUR MORALS AND VALUES AND CALLING IT FAMILY TIME OR MANAGEMENT PRACTICES . WAKE UP OR MAN UP AND STAND FOR RIGHTOUSNESS IF YOU CALL YOUSELF A GODLY PERSON.

Having lived in a farming area as a kid, I can appreciate a day without hunters in the fields. If it is passed, I hope it is worded in such a way that Sunday hunting is allowed ONLY if the landowner posts it is ok to hunt there on Sundays. Too many bad hunters ( fishermen too ) are inconsiderate of the landowners.

It amazes me that the Farm Bureau wants to restrict Sunday hunting. These are the same people that want relief from the government for crop damage from high deer populations. Sunday hunting should be available for those who want to participate. Those who do not can continue on as they wish. I always thought it was odd that you could fish and buy liquor and party on Sundays but not hunt.

sorry, this country was founded on freedom of religion NOT for religion. not you or any government should ban sunday hunting based on a religous view. PERIOD!! i dont live in a state that bans hunting on sunday and if i did i would be at the front of the line trying to fight it. its ridiculas. hunting seasons are generaly short and it is expensive, so to only have a couple saturdays to hunt...well its just going to kill hunting in your state. in these hard economic times i would think the no hunting on sundays states would welcome the extra revenue it would generate. i know i end up spending more money when i go hunting on sunday

I believe it should be left up to the individual hunter how they wish to spend their Sundays. Since I live in MD we are allowed to hunt on Sundays, on private property, in select counties, b/c the deer are over populated here. Personally, as far as religion goes, it depends on what time my two religions are. I can go on Saturday evenings (I'm Catholic so it's allowed) and on Sundays in the fall it depends on what time my Ravens are on. I think you should do something you enjoy on Sunday and leave the rest for the week, that the definition of rest. If you enjoy cutting the grass on Sunday go for it, me, that can wait till Monday. The sabbath was made for man; not the man made for the sabbath.

I live in Connecticut where Sunday hunting is not allowed. I agree with many of the posts here. Most of us get two days a week off and not being able to hunt on Sunday cuts our time afield in half. We have an over abundance of deer and the State has gone as far as extending the seasons and adding extra tags. If Sunday hunting were allowed, it would definately help ease the population. There is a bill in Hartford that we are trying to pass that would allow bow hunting on Sunday's. It has not passed yet but it is a start.

I grew up on a tobacco farm in NC, and i have enjoyed hunting every sunday during the season, and i hope that others will get to enjoy this too. It is so nice when you dont have to plan a day of hunting before or after work. I can go to church and get holy, then make some deer holy after that.

There is no reason to restrict Sunday hunting. Sexton mentions it perfectly in the article. Sunday hunting would allow for another day for families to enjoy the opportunity to hunt together without normal weekly interruptions. It's a stupid law, and stupid laws should be repealed based on common sense. It's also amazing to me that anyone would stand with HSUS, least of all The PA Farm Bureau.

leddym thats wat surprises me the most! I live on a farm and my dads part of the PFB. I just cant think of any reason they should be against it. If a guy waqnts to go hunting and not go to church, THATS HIS CHOICE! Besides aren't church and state SUPPOSED to be separate entities!?!

I have been hunting McKean am Warren county for 45 years an I would not mind seeing Sunday hunting for all game except deer. Sunday would just give the Local's another day to drive around an shoot the few remaining deer. I know some nimrod's (out of staters) do it to. The deer don't worship but they deserve a rest too! I use Sunday afternoon for my camp chores an I like it like that.

I can easily see why farmers would not want hunters in their fields on sunday. I grew up in pa. we always hunt saturday and scout sunday as a family. we have more family time scouting than hunting. we would need to stop this tradition if hunting on sunday were allowed. also like tmg said, animals need a break too. Sunday was not only designed for humans! The other problem is that I do not have the stamina to work on construction all week like I do and then hunt hard all weekend. I need a break but I know that I would not allow myself one if sunday hunting were allowed.

I have lived in PA all my life and grown up with this law. It is all a matter of individual principles and values regarding sunday hunting. For example my inlaws despise it, I for one truly want it. We are clearly on different sides of the fence but that is what they beleive. For me I would love to take my kids hunting on a Sunday, for now I travel to New York just for that reason but the cost is high. As for farmers who want or do not want hunting on their land on Sundays that is for them to decide. In PA it is illegal to hunt over planted crops without permission from the land owner anyway so if they dont want it they can say so.

Let's keep the reliion out of this. I'll bet no one goes to church Sunday morning and then goes home to read whatever "bible" their religion promotes. No football, NASCAR, picbics, etc. Two things you can't do in PA on Sunday - hunt most animals (crows and coyotes are OK) and buy a car from a dealer. I also agree on the crop damage - no Sunday hunting no depredation permits. While we are at it how about opening PA to semi-automatics for hunting. Don't give me the crap about firepower; I've seen model 94s and 760s dump out 8 -10 in short order.

I am also a lifetime resident of PA. Sunday hunting has always been a dream of mine, to obtain another day outdoors doing what i love to do. If the "issue" with hunting on Sunday's is the farmers want a day not worrying about who's on thier property, then that farmer would have told me when I asked permission to hunt his/her land and I would respect that by not hunting there. However, I do pay taxes for property and a licesnse fee for STATE lands that I should be able to utilize any time I want. I have the same oppurtunity to fish on a farmer's land and they have religious beliefs that forbid me to fish there on Sunday's (Amish), therefore, I respect their wishes and fish somewhere else. I want the same oppurtunity to do that with hunting.

I too live in Pa. and I was raised in the outdoors. It's not just a tradition for some folks ...it's in their roots! It's who we are!I am a christian and do devote my time to the Lord, however even your church allows you to miss due to work or something dealing with your family. The bible promotes a strong family life.I have a need to hunt as to help fill our freezer and to get my family through the winter months.People as a christian you don't have to be in church to give God his time.Enjoy what he created and you can still give homage to the lord! But that being said there are alot of families that work 6 days a week that no longer hunt because they have no choice but to work.Sunday Hunting would give everyone a fair chance.

I have talked to at least 100 hunters in the area and 85 percent says no Sunday hunting .What are we going to hunt? The deer population is not the greatest thanks to the PGC to what they call management. All these hunters who complain about no hunting on Sundays must not have heard about vacation days, sick days, or personal days. I have and thats why i get to hunt. I have been hunting for 45 years and i have no problem with no hunting on Sundays. Besides the animals need a rest also. Do we need to try to shoot everything thats out there.

I have a isue with moringman. Not everyone has vacation days, sick days or Personal days like you who has a "Good" job that you undoughtly has time to do this. And a "TRUELY good hunter does not over kill the game. Those are why these laws are in place. Last year wasn't the only year that I never fired a shot at game. I've been hunting deer for 51years now and have never taken more than two deer in a hunting season, that was all we needed. I was born on a farm in S. Ind. and i've been hunting ever year from wherance I can remember. I love hunting and I respect the game that I hunt with utmost respect. Ijust wish others did the same.

I live in PA and have farmed my whole life. Where I live there are very few deer left. The heavy crop damage is in other areas of the county and the next county which is where State College and Penn State is. Most of that area is posted and leased. thousands of acres with few hunters. I wish that they would stop doe hunting where I live and force the areas that complain about crop damage to allow open hunting. Those farms can always open up for red tag hunting or shoot some deer and donate them to local food banks.

I live in Virginia and at last count I think that we are 1 of 11 remaining states in the in the eastern US that are still not allowed to hunt on Sunday. Here in Va., we are allowed to purchase everything from alcohol (I.E. beer -wine) to guns and ammo but God forbid that we try to hunt on Sunday. This seems so idiototic to me. As an avid hunter, I attend church and how this interfers with being able to go to the woods and injoy Gods great creations is simply mine blowing to me. Even though I can't go kill a deer on Sunday the coyotes in our area are ever increasng in numbers and they continue to kill our fawns and young does on Sunday but hunters are not allowed? What is wrong with our government? I love my God and country and I am a Viet Nam vet and I just don't understand why the churches in eastern Va don't want us in the woods with guns on Sunday. It was OK for us to kill people in Viet Nam on Sunday and this must mean that our deer are more valued than peoples lives.

Government is getting too big for its britches. We are becoming a nanny state because gov't thinks we are too stupid to handle our own affairs. We need to be told to wear our seat belts, what cars to drive, what to set our thermostats to, what foods to eats, and now when we can hunt.....Please..... Gov't get the hell out of my private business. Next elections you had better get out there and vote. We can not afford 4 more years of this administration and all the other liberal that occupy the offices in our state and federal government. Another 4 years of obama and this great country won't be recognizable.

I also agree with wmosley#1 except that any form of government with the current players is detrimental to this country we need 4 year term limits for all politicos bur that is another story. I also live in Mass and we are one of the worst states for blue laws. We abandoned all the prohibitions regarding retail sales on Sunday where this was supposed to be a day spent as a family day but yet you can still bring a firearm to church with you to protect yourself and your family where is the reasoning behind this kind of ludicrous thinking. Hunting Sunday was a God given right to be able to provide for our family from the beginning of time and therefor should still be right TODAY.

I grew up in PA and would have loved another day of hunting.. It is stupid that they still have this law in the books. As rjmajka states they did away with most other blue laws but yet keep a select few.. I landowners do not want people on their land on Sundays than just say no.. It amazes me that so many people think just because they dont do something or something is not right for them then NO ONE SHOULD DO it.. Last I checked this is a free country ..but there are some who just dont care about losing their freedoms... I do live in a state where I can hunt on Sundays if I choose now..
