Attn: Violent Criminals: 30 Days Until I'm Strapped

Jun 10

If the county sheriff's office does their part, within the next 30 days I should find a Minnesota Permit to Carry a handgun in my mailbox. At that point I'll be able to legally bring my wonderful friend and companion—Springfield Armory's XD .45 ACP—with me just about anywhere. He's a life saver, I tell ya.

I had long wanted to take advantage of the Minnesota Personal Protection Act, but just hadn't found a convenient opportunity. A few months ago I joined some of my local cohorts from the National Wild Turkey Federation to finally take my Permit to Carry class with David Meacham, a certified instructor from the American Association of Certified Firearms Instructors.

I passed the 1-day educational course and shooting range test. It wasn't complicated by any means, but was highly valuable; our instructor brought a wealth of thought-provoking, informative personal defense- and handgun-related info to the table. I left the range that day with a sense of confidence, an education ... and a signed certificate.

Now I just need Ramsey County Sheriff Matt Bostrom's approval. Join me in a video blog  as I visit the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center to submit my application.

And be sure to leave a comment below with your thoughts about carrying a handgun.

I have a CHL for Texas. Is there a reciprocal agreement between states have a concealed permit law? It would be nice to have my Springfield M1911A-1 along on trips.

Go to the NRA store or catalog, they have a book on this very subject showing all of the states and their rules concerning carrying hand guns and long guns. It's $13.95, also you might want to get the book called "Self Defense Laws of all 50 States, $29.95., also from NRA. These two books well save You alot of problems while traveling from state to state. CGL of MS

I have the CHL for the state of Texas if your state has it why would you not get it. I think every person that is legal should get one. Some states do let CHL holders from other state carry but there is a lot that dont.

I applied last August here in St Lawrence County, New York. It took 6 months before I called the County clerk's office about it. I finally was fingerprinted 2 weeks later. It took another month before I was interviewed and my references were called. It then took another month and a half before I received my permit. I love being able to carry my SA XD40 anywhere, but it was a long wait. 9 months from paying the $100+ to get my concealed carry permit.

I live in Wyoming and starting July 1 Wyoming will become the fourth state to allow its residents to carry concealed without a permit. Lots of mixed feelings about the passing of such a law. If the law had not passed I was going to apply for a concealed carry permit.

Josh;
Congrats on your big step.
SC takes 90 days on the button. My wife and I did the course, (she shot better than I did!!!). We did our paperwork and exactly 90 days later I had my CCW. She got hers at 87 days. (she said it was because she shot 297 out of 300 - i shot 295!)
So for 3 days my wife was my bodyguard! :^D
Good luck and I hope you never have to use!!

@ Lara1 - congrats on Wyoming stepping up. I wish every state would follow the example..

WI should have legal CC soon, but first they have too tighten the collar on their free citizens. I like the $100's you had to pay and I'm sure that's not all of it.

@Mike: Thanks for the kind words! And sounds like you've got yourself a keeper!

@whitetailfiery: Yes, unfortunately it costs a few bucks to get everything taken care of. I hope Wisconsin does get on board; I travel there often.

@jscott21: This map should help you: http://www.usacarry.com/concealed_carry_permit_reciprocity_maps.html

I'm a little late to the party, but if you carry a hadngun for self defense, or keep one in the home for defensive purpose, you owe it to yourself to take a good class pertaining to the laws of when you can and can't shoot, along with how to articulate why you did what you did.

The best class I have found for that has been Massad Ayoob's LFI course. The name has been changed, to MAG40, Massad Ayoob Group and while costly it has saved me a lot of money in lawyer fees, criminal charges, and other various bills.

I'm not connected to Massad Ayoob, except as a student that believes in his course. There are lots of good, even great, trainers out there but nobody I have found touches on the legal stuff like Mas does.
