if the area you are hunting in and you are seeing some pre-rut activity, then the answer is yes to all your questions. There is debate on whether to blind call or wait until a deer is within sight. Rattling and grunting together is a killer combo during the pre-rut in my opinion. How long and how often is a subject that is up for debate. For me, I use my years of experience in the woods and take mental notes on "never do that again". Good luck in and happy hunting.

I also use a rattle bag and have done research on the same topic. Many of the article I have read say to rattle in sessions which can be in the blind. First session lasting about 30 to 45 secs wait about a minute to a minute and a half and go again for may 15- 20secs. This is a great site will give you all the answers you could ask for-nepage&q=&f=true" target="_blank">http://books.google.com/books?id=hltOEy7pxf8C&lpg=PA122&ots=8qBuiadhkf&dq=when%20is%20proper%20time%20to%20use%20doe%20bleat&pg=PA120#v nepage&q=&f=true

In 2001, I was up a pine 25 ft., edge of good deer field. To my left about 100-150 yds. away in the bush, I hear a battle...two large racks went at it for about 10-15 mins. To this day, I am kicking my butt, I did not get out ot the stand and sneak over to the scene. Wind was in my favour...GRrrrr. I've rattled in bucks for both my brother and nephew on two occasions, and one for myself. Sequence went on for about 5-6 minutes. Wait for at least 1/2 hour before tring again. Don't hammer em too hard. Member Since (10/14/1993)

I read an artical along time ago that said never rattle more then 30 or 40 seconds, after the first rattleing wait about 10 minutes then rattle again for about 20-30 seconds. Wait about 15 minutes then rattle for about 30-40 seconds, now wait about 20 minutes then rattle for about15-20 seconds, now wait about 30 minutes and rattle for about 15 seconds. I have had pretty good luck doing it that way, and by the way I use a small set of antlers from a seven point I got years ago, the idea being that a big buck will hear that and think it's two small deer fighting and come in to steal the women, it dos'nt work everytime but you would be amaized at how often it does work. Try it and see if it works for you, the best time is pre rut and full rut and just after rut, any other time is just luckybecause they don't have any interest in the girls, or not as much! would a rattle bag still work if you took some of the pegs out of it to try and make it sound like smaller deer? Proud member of the NRA

that is a great article/book mmcblain. I've only been bow hunting for a few years now, with no luck yet, but have with out knowing made most of the calls in that article and made some of the mistakes he talks about. But it really is a trial and error kind of thing. As I've found, something that works one time on a deer might not work the next time. I've gotten deer to about 50 yards on my own variations of calls so maybe with some of the info from that link I can get them within range. I haven't used a rattle before so can't comment on it's use.
Have fun, be Safe, and good luck.
