What price do you consider " emptying " your wallet ? Winchester has a Coyote Lite model rifle in their lineup this year. Also be sure and checkout both the Savage AND the Stevens line as they are both great buys in today's market.

Well, as I understand it most times you'll only get one shot at a coyote, so you might wanna check out the H&R Handi-Rifle in .223, .22-250, .243, etc.

I just bought a Savage 22 mag for coyote. Its on the small side for coyotes, however should do the trick out to 100 yds or so. Besides, when I do get out to hunt coyotes, I'm an opportunist and would also take a rabbit or squirl if in season, making any centerfire overkill. I bought their more expensive model, 93 BTVS, however they get much cheaper, both in Savage, Marlin and many others. CCI makes a bullet for coyotes too which is supposed to mushroom like a big game bullet. I have some on back order so can't comment on it, but it had good reviews online.

It all depends on what "breaking your wallet" is...I have a remington 700 in 204 ruger with a bushnell 3200 scope on it.. it hasnt failed me yet. i can get a 1 inch group at 200 yards..

Yes, the Marlin is a good gun, especially for the price, but so is a Stevens. The Marlin has an adjustable trigger; the Stevens does not. I have a Stevens in .243 for coyotes, have had a trigger job done on it, and it has worked very well. I read somewhere that the Marlin's barrel is attached the same way as a Savage/Stevens (with that locking ring thing that sets the head space very accurately) which is a big reason they have very good accuracy. All that being said-remember that for coyotes you will likely need a good scope so take that into your accounting.

I like my Savage .17 hmr. Now this is a very small caliber with a very flat trajectory. If you want to hunt for the fur then the .17 hmr is a very good choice, but if you are just looking to whack em and stack em than anything from a .270 and smaller will do just fine. Don't forget about a scatter gun. A good 12 ga. with a "dead coyote" buck shot will be devastating (rummer has it) out to about 60 yards.

I like my Savage 16 in 250-3000 Savage. It has the accutrigger and accustock bedding. Very accurate. I used it recently on a successful Antelope hunt and we then set up for coyotes. we dusted quite a few near a cattle pen, set up on top a hill, shooting at 400 to 500 yards.used a harris bipod, Leupold 4-12  scope  and Leupold RX II range finder. Used handloaded 90 grain Sierra HP's in front of 40 grains of Varget. Also 117 grain Hornady SST's in front of 41 grains of 4350 EXT worked real well on the Antelope and coyotes.

I use either my 22-250 or my 223.  The 223 would be better on your wallet as far as cost of ammo goes.  The ammo is more plentiful.  Thus,  better on your wallet than most any other ammo.  I reload. So, I don't worry about it too much.  Even then.  I take my 223 more often for the same reason.  It's also cheaper to reload for.

Just make sure you know your state laws on what calibers you can use legally. If it was me I would go with a .22-250 or a .223. You need to know the state law first though. So see if they have any restrictions.

Whatever you can shoot accurately, and handle well.  If your deer rifle is your pet toy, and your not worried about pelts, then use it.  The practice is always great.  Any of the .22 large rifle calibers work, my personal preference is my old .220 Swift.

Hello everyone!

It depends on why you are hunting the Coyote. If you want to save the pelt then you want a caliber/cartridge that is strong enough but yet is light enough not to destroy the pelt. But if you are hunting coyotes to to limit the numbers and you are not concerned with pelt damage, then any caliber/cartridge will do.

I would recommend one of the following .223 Rem, .243 Win, .22-250 Rem, and .25-06 Rem.

Don't overlook the .204 ruger. That round is perfect for shooting coyotes in my opinion.

I bought a stevens 200 223rem for $300. It shoots pretty good but it is a little ugly, mine has the plain grey stock. I see now they have them with a camo stock that looks a little better. the Marlin is also a very accurate gun I have a 30-06 XL7 and it is as accurate rifle as i have ever shot. I have seen them with a scope for about $319 in 243. also for about $400 you can get a wetherby vanguard in any caliber you want. I would not go any smaler than 204 ruger or 223 rem for coyote.
